Over the past 20 years, Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) has become a well-established and industry-accepted method for the installation of new communication cables (telephone, cable, fiber optics) and underground pipelines that transport potable water, sewerage and natural gas. HDD is an environmentally friendly pipeline construction method alternative to traditional open cut. Research has shown that HDD can reduce open-cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 percent and results in pipeline construction projects that are completed faster with less disruption to the public and environment, especially in environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands and river crossings.
